If you didn’t work in publishing, what would you be doing?
I would either be an archaeologist or a literature scholar. I like stories and discovering things in all shapes and forms, so I think I would enjoy either of these two.
Outside of reading, what do you do for fun?
I work on my own novel, play video games and explore New York City!
What was the last TV show you binged?
Downton Abbey, which I adored (I’m late to the party!). I loved seeing how the cast of characters wove together to not only have their own personal stories, but an overarching story. I can’t wait for the movie in September.
What is your favorite part of the acquisition process?
Reading and discovering the novel. It feels like opening a present: you never quite know what you’ll find and it’s always such a pleasure to find something lovely.
Do you have a favorite element of writing (like voice or dialogue) and if that’s great, does it make you more willing to help craft the rest of the manuscript?
I have two: characters and voice. If the characters in a novel make me root for them, I will be compelled to continue reading and I’ll fall in love with the book. Similarly, I love voice that jumps off the page. It will keep me glued to the novel.
