Kelli Martin Interview

If you didn’t work in publishing, what would you be doing?

When I was a kid I wanted to be a cardiologist…but only because I liked the way the word sounded! lolol

What is your favorite non-client book?
I’m obsessed with The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty. I love the way she mixes humor and heartbreak. Her social commentary on modern-day motherhood is sharp and accurate. Plus, the characters sometimes react in ways that I feel like we only dream of doing! Last, she writes about what-could-have-been in a way that makes my heart ache.

What was the last TV show you binged?

Jane the Virgin. I love how fun and smart it is. That show gives such good drama.

What is your favorite part of the acquisition process?

Pitching the book—there’s nothing like it, it’s an addictive feeling. I love pitching because I get to channel my passion for why an editor or sales force or readers will fall in love with a book. It’s the agent’s way of screaming from the rooftops.

What advice would you like to give writers who will be pitching to you?
I know pitching can be nerve-wracking, but remember to have fun with it. And then treat yourself afterwards; it’s important to celebrate your writing accomplishments!

Do you have a favorite element of writing (like voice or dialogue) and if that’s great, does it make you more willing to help craft the rest of the manuscript?
I’m a plot-driven girl. And I love delicious, scandalous secrets revealed – the more the better!

What is the one thing you wish would land in your inbox that hasn’t?
An entertaining, heartwarming, touching story of friendship and/or family drama set on a beach or island.

What is your favorite romance trope?
Oooh, fun question! I love the second chance at love trope. Whether it’s after a divorce or death or even a married couple that rediscovers one another and reunites, I love the coziness and the comfort of second chance romances. Plus, I love that with second chance love stories, we see characters being more open and more honest about their needs and vulnerabilities. It’s so refreshing and moving!
