Hot Night Critiques

Friday, April 20th 9:00 PM – Midnight

It’s back again!

Hot Night is a popular Chicago-North RWA program that allows participants to bring up to 3 pages of a love scene—from sweet to scorching—for a small group critique. This year’s event is bigger and better than ever, because we’ll be coached by award-winning erotic romance author, Joey W. Hill. After Joey shares with us how sex scenes, paired with compelling characters, make for page-turning romance, we’ll dive into our own novels’ love scenes and make them shine.

Joey Hill Quote

To participate, conference attendees (both pubbed and unpubbed are welcome) should plan to bring 25 copies of their scene* to share with a small group. Scenes will be read aloud, then group members will share what they loved about the scene, and what could be changed to make it even better.

Just want to listen? No problem, come join in the fun.

This event will take place Friday evening. Feel free to bring a cocktail, beer or other beverage from the hotel bar.

Space is limited, and we encourage those interested in attending to please sign-up in advance by contacting the Spring Fling committee (conference@chicagonorthrwa.org). Please put HOT NIGHT CRITIQUES in the subject line.  Be sure to indicate where your pages land on our heat meter: If you would like to attend as a Voyeur, that is fine! Just let us know what heat level you’d like to listen in on!

SWEET: Mild sensuality, mild heat, no graphic euphemisms.

SPICY: Moderate sensuality, moderate heat, more graphic language.

STEAMY: High level of sensuality, graphic description of anatomy and of sexual acts.

SCORCHING: Intense erotic scenes, may include BDSM and m/f/m or f/m/f menage.

* To allow time for as many participants to read their scenes as possible, please make sure your pages follow standard industry guidelines: 1″ margins, double-spaced, 12 pt font in Times New Roman or Courier. Thank You! We recommend you print your pages ahead of time, but there is a Business Center on-site at the Double Tree for your convenience.

* We know midnight is late, but this event is so popular nobody wants it to end! However, if you’re the pumpkin-turning type feel free to stay as long as you like, and sneak out when you want to get your beauty sleep. Just make sure you volunteer to read early!
